With a student population of about 2,000, the department of Biochemistry is arguably one of the largest teaching departments in the University of Nairobi. It is physically located in the College of Biological and Physical Sciences (CBPS), Chiromo Campus, off-Riverside Drive. However, administratively the department is under the School of Medicine, College of health Sciences, Kenyatta National Hospital campus.
The department offers a four year Bachelor of Science (BSc.) in Biochemistry as well as a Master of Science (MSc.) degree in Biochemistry programmes. In addition, we offer ten undergraduate and five postgraduate service courses to students from six schools and two faculties of the University of Nairobi.
To address new market demands for high quality personnel in emerging and allied disciplines, the department is currently at an advanced stage of mounting an MSc. degree in Forensic Science. This course is set to improve the quality and timeliness of forensic investigations in the country by providing homegrown state-of-the-art training. To keep the pace of innovation and relevance to our customers, a number of programmes in both undergraduate and postgraduate disciplines are in the pipeline.
To accomplish the enormous task of providing quality teaching, cutting-edge research and consultancy service in Biochemistry and related disciplines, the department prides itself with a dedicated team of more than 60 highly qualified academic, technical and support staff.. Amongst the academic members of staff are 5 full Professors, 7 associate Professors, 2 Senior Lectures, 13 Lecturers, 5 Tutorial Fellows and 3 Graduate Assistants. This team is committed to providing quality teaching, research and consultancy services to Kenyans in the areas of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology and related disciplines.
To afford biochemistry students an opportunity to foster awareness of responsibilities and the challenges of the modern scientist, Nairobi University Biochemistry Student Association (NUBSA) in an association that brings biochemistry undergraduate students of all backgrounds together. The association endeavors to enhance the educational experience of biochemistry students at the University through social activities, public outreach, and academic and professional development opportunities. We believe in creating a supportive environment where all students can have fun, excel academically, and grow professionally
